Precautions
Prior to taking allopurinol, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, especially if you’ve had a severe reaction to it, or if you have other allergies. Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of liver or kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, or adhere to unusual diets such as fasting.
This medication may induce drowsiness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) may intensify drowsiness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in tasks requiring alertness until you are capable of doing so safely. Alcohol consumption may also diminish the efficacy of this medication; thus, limit alcoholic beverages. Consult your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
Before undergoing surgery, inform your doctor or dentist about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal products.
During pregnancy, utilize this medication only if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
Allopurinol can pass into breast milk and may have adverse effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
