Abortion Procedures: Meaning, Types, Procedures, Dilation and Evacuation

Dilation and Extraction (D&X), commonly known as late-term abortion, requires the expertise of a specialized provider when sought later in pregnancy. Typically reserved for instances where there are significant fetal abnormalities or maternal health complications, this procedure shares similar preparatory and post-procedural steps with Dilation and Evacuation (D&E), including ultrasound for pregnancy dating and cervical dilation.

General IV anesthesia may be offered for sedation, particularly in hospital settings. While alternative options such as labor induction, hysterotomy, and hysterectomy exist, they entail greater risks and are only considered when medically warranted.
