What Comes Next?
Following the completion of your procedure, you will be required to rest at the clinic under supervision for approximately 30 minutes. Subsequently, you can relax further in a recovery area until you feel prepared to return home. Should you have undergone sedation, it’s imperative to arrange for someone to drive you home. Additionally, you will receive a prescription for an antibiotic.
Expect to experience some cramping for a few days and light bleeding for up to 2 weeks. Most discomfort and cramping can be effectively managed with either over-the-counter or prescription pain medication such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or codeine.
Plan to take it easy on the day of your procedure, and consider allowing yourself a few extra days of rest if you underwent a D&E or D&X. Avoid lifting heavy objects for several days, and consult your doctor regarding when it will be safe to engage in sexual activity or use tampons again—this may take up to a month before any vaginal insertion is recommended.
Should you encounter severe pain, develop a fever exceeding 100 F, or find yourself soaking through more than two pads per hour, it is imperative to contact your healthcare provider or utilize the emergency contact provided immediately.
Most healthcare providers will schedule a follow-up appointment within 1 to 4 weeks to ensure your physical recovery and confirm the cessation of your pregnancy.
