Post-Abortion Self-Care

What are the Potential Complications Following an Abortion?

Research indicates that abortions are generally safe, even considered safer than childbirth. However, although rare, significant complications can still arise. These may include:

1. Infection: There is a slight risk of infection following both surgical and medical abortions. To mitigate this risk, doctors may prescribe antibiotics after a procedure. It’s advised to refrain from activities such as bathing, swimming, douching, and sexual intercourse during the recovery period to minimize the likelihood of infection. Your healthcare provider can provide guidance on when it’s safe to resume these activities.

2. Incomplete abortion: This occurs when the pregnancy is not entirely expelled. It is more commonly associated with medical abortions compared to surgical ones. In such cases, a follow-up procedure may be necessary to ensure the completion of the abortion process.

3. Hemorrhage: While some bleeding is normal, excessive bleeding can pose a risk to health.

4. Organ injury: During a surgical abortion, there is a potential risk of injury to organs such as the uterus, bowel, or bladder. In rare instances, there may be tears in the uterus or cervix, particularly in later-term abortions.

Studies suggest that in the majority of cases, abortion does not elevate the risk of future health issues such as infertility, breast cancer, or depression.
