Post-Abortion Self-Care

When can you expect your menstrual cycle to resume after an abortion? Typically, your period will resume within 4 to 6 weeks following the procedure. However, it’s important to note that you can become pregnant before your period restarts.

Immediately following an abortion, or even on the same day as the procedure, you can initiate various forms of birth control. These methods include:

– Intrauterine device (IUD)
– Implant
– Pills
– Patch
– Shot
– Vaginal ring

For a surgical abortion, you can receive an IUD or implant immediately afterward. In the case of a medical abortion, you can obtain an implant when you take your first pill, and an IUD once the abortion is complete.

If you’ve undergone a second-trimester abortion, you must wait until your cervix returns to its normal size before being fitted for a diaphragm or cervical cap, which typically takes about 6 weeks.
